IJJO Day by Day

The steering committee of the IJJO-led project ‘Strengthening Juvenile Justice Systems in the counter-terrorism context’ held a meeting on 22nd February in Madrid with experts from the European Council for Juvenile Justice (ECJJ).  The project, co-funded by the Justice Programme of the European Union, addresses the specific situation of children and young people in cases of radicalisation, violent extremism and terrorism, as well as their protection under international and European law.

IJJO Day by Day

A new community of practice website has been launched as part of the ‘Strengthening Juvenile Justice Systems in the counter-terrorism context’ project, which is funded by the Justice Programme of the European Union. This project deals with the issue of children involved in radicalisation processes leading to violent extremism and terrorism. It focuses on the action taken by justice systems to prevent and tackle this issue.

IJJO Day by Day

The Fair Trials International-led project “Advancing Defence Rights for Children” hosted its Regional Training Conference at Leiden University (The Netherlands) from 26th to 28th January. This project, in which the IJJO works as partner, aims at increasing the ability of defence lawyers to effectively represent children in criminal proceedings, providing tools, training and networking opportunities which facilitate the achievement of this goal.

The third steering group meeting of the ‘FACT FOR MINORS’ project, which deals with alternative care for young offenders with psychological disorders, took place on 16th, 17th and 18th January at the Catholic University of Porto, in Portugal. The project is co-funded by the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme of the European Union.

IJJO Day by Day

The three day regional mentors meeting of the AWAY project, organised by the Terre des Hommes foundation, took place between 9th – 11th January 2018 in Budapest, Hungary. The event was chaired by researcher and curriculum developer at the Hintalovon Foundation, Szilvia Gyurkó, curriculum developer at the French National Academy for Youth Protection and Juvenile Justice, Jessica Filippi, and program leader at the Terre des Hommes foundation, Viki Sebhelyi. The AWAY project seeks to promote the use of diversion in juvenile justice.

IJJO Day by Day

A new webinar has been published by the FACT FOR MINORS project, in which the IJJO participates as partner. The webinar, led by psychologists Mauro Di Lorenzo and Virginia Suigo of the Minotauro Institute, deals with the single most common reason for referral to child and adolescent mental health services: disruptive, impulse-control and conduct disorders.

The second steering committee meeting of the IJJO-led project ‘Implementing Restorative Justice with Child Victims’, co-funded by the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme of the European Union, took place on 19th December at the IJJO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium. The IJJO was represented during this event by project manager, Silvia Randazzo.

The third and final study visit and national seminar of the IJJO-led project ‘Strengthening juvenile justice systems in the counter-terrorism context: Capacity-building and peer learning among stakeholders’ took place in Bremen, Germany, from 11th to 13th December 2017. This event was organised by the Bremen Ministry of Justice and Constitution and was attended by the ‘Strengthening’ project partners, as well as invited consultants and stakeholders.

IJJO Day by Day

The annual European Forum on the rights of the child organised by the European Commission took place on 7th – 8th November 2017 in Brussels to discuss children deprived of their liberty and alternatives to detention. The Forum gathered various organisations, practitioners, academics and institutions from the EU, as well as Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the Western Balkans. The IJJO was represented by director Raquel Jiménez Martos.
